These two paintings above were exhibited in the exhibition at Landmark Theatre, Ilfracombe, North Devon, UK (3rd September 2007 - 7th October 2007) both images were sold and are in private collections.

In many respects I was influenced by the Abstract Expressionists and Gerhard Richter.

The fashion for gardening, for an asthmatic, is a cruel joke. We have been ‘doing’ the garden at our home and I made the mistake of planting several climbing plants – I now know I have another contact allergy! Yet again concrete is the only true solution to my problems. The larger paintings in this exhibition are based on the colours these climbing plants go when you spray them with weedkiller.

Rediscovering the printmaking process after nearly 40 years has been an interesting process ~ disappointingly modern inks are not as rich in colour (earthy colours are very plastic like) and modern waterbased inks don't become part of the surface, they sit on it, which is incredibly frustrating ~ the reason I took up printing in the first place was because of the absorbed flatness of the pigments.

Although the chief military forces never engaged in a major battle with each other, they expressed the conflict through military coalitions, strategic conventional force deployments, extensive aid to states deemed vulnerable, proxy wars, espionage, propaganda, conventional and nuclear arms races, appeals to neutral nations, rivalry at sports events, and technological competitions such as the Space Race.

Triumphant Adventure

The political and ideological polarity of Russia and the USA during the cold war (retrospectively) makes an interesting starting point for a new project. Apparently there are rumors that the early days of the Russian space program were not only motivated by military and scientific advancement but a search for a new world to populate – to put citizens of the Russian Republic on once they had realized their ambitions of ensuring immortality. There was no God in Russia (officially) and the USA put their trust in God, both were chasing the same dreams, immortality and history. Gagarin achieved both by becoming a God (hero) in his own country and the rest of the world – all gods die young.

I shook the hand of a man who shook the hand of my all time hero Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin, that was for me like touching history, if only secondhand.

Notes:	The first 15 tracks of this CD are from the 'This Window' 1989 cassette release Jude The Obscure. Band members on this release include: Peter Bright, Veronica Henry and Steve Portnoi. Below are the recording notes of Jude the Obscure written in 1989: "Jude the Obscure" was released in May 1989 and is the second solo release by T/W on M4TR and is seen as a natural progression from the first tape 'Hope', which was released twelve months before. The songs on Jude are more inventive and the recording style more experimental e.g., the use of different speeds, machines, tape types with and without noise reduction, the use of microphones (different types in various different rooms)at one point the whole house became the studio, the bathroom the live room, the bedroom the dead room, etc. The most important thing about JTO is that these diverse factors combine together to create a whole product in which traditional songs of melody and musical structure combine with experimentation to compliment each other and the bitch is raw in places The use of instruments on JTO creates a bizarre effect, one minute a crazy AXEMAN guitar will disappear into a didgeridoo droning underneath a flute and eastern drum and the next a floating female vocal will be echoed by a telephone answer machine. The whole experience was a great adventure.

Road trips, journeys, and speed inspire. The image below was taken on a road trip I did in 2007, with stays in Brussels, Zurich (it was going to be Prague – but the German authorities banned us from their country on the outward journey) Zagreb, Munich, Ipers. Going through France, Belgium, Luxemburg, Switzerland, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia and Germany. We did this in six days. Click on the image for more photographs of our ‘Cannonball’ journey.

Nancy Spungen left home at age 17 and moved to New York City. She worked as a stripper around Times Square (and allegedly at a brothel as well). She followed bands such as Aerosmith, The New York Dolls and The Ramones. In 1977, she moved to London and met The Sex Pistols. When lead singer Johnny Rotten did not show interest in her, she pursued bassist Sid Vicious and they soon moved in together.

This was taken with a 35mm Pentax SLR in 1974 and manipulated in the darkroom in Stourbridge College of Art and Design. This reminds me of the simple pleasures I had messing about with making images – it is a shame I have become cynical.

There are millions of ‘Art’ viewpoints; some take a position of extreme difficulty or resistance. This position questions everything and is unforgiving. The principal is that artists should look beyond the superficiality of life and expose the core. They should also look at the superficiality of Art and culture and rip and tear at the flesh of its own conception, rejecting Metaphor, Romanticism etc. etc. By implementing such self imposed draconian measures you may be left with a purity of ideas but that leaves little to create or live for.

Joseph Beuys (May 12, 1921 – January 23, 1986) was a German performance artist, sculptor, installation artist, graphic artist, art theorist and pedagogue of art.

His extensive work is grounded in concepts of humanism, social philosophy and anthroposophy; it culminates in his "extended definition of art" and the idea of social sculpture as a gesamtkunstwerk, for which he claimed a creative, participatory role in shaping society and politics. His career was characterized by passionate, even acrimonious public debate, but he is now regarded as one of the most influential artists of the 20th century.

Mailart in many respects pushes the boundaries of what can be considered art, it has a surreal or Dada quality about it. Mail art sometimes reaches the mainstream gallery audiences but never really reaches the greater highs. Good mail art would not look out of place next to exhibitions like the Joseph Beuys exhibition in Cardiff.

Mail art is a worldwide art and music movement that began in the early 1960s. the principle is simple you send visual art (but also music, sound art, poetry, etc.) through the international postal system. Mail Art is sometimes known as Postal Art or Correspondence Art. Mail Art is a network, based on the principles of barter and equal one-to-one collaboration.

After a peak in popularity in the late 1980s and early 1990s, the Mail Art phenomenon has gradually migrated to the Internet, whose “social networks” were largely anticipated and predicted by the interactive processes of postal collaborations. Nevertheless, Mail Art is still practiced by a loose planetary community involving thousands of mailartists from the most varied backgrounds.

Why I am involved in Mail-Art:

Was involved in the cassette / music side of mailart in the 1980's /90's. The whole idea of a network of artists connected by the postal system appealed to me and was an antidote to the stranglehold the 'Art / Music' establishment had over my creativity.

I have always considered mailart to be one of the major unsung heroes of Art History and every effort should be made to raise its profile.

The early experiences of the audio mail art scene by Peter Bright (artist, This Window)

If you sat me down and asked me what were the main reasons for getting involved in this emotionally draining and sometimes very unrewarding ARTFORM called ‘home taping’, then I would say two things:

In the early 1970’s when I was about 13 or 14 years old I loved ‘Motown’ and ‘Led Zeppelin’ (my music tastes were very eclectic). In the UK there was a TV show called ‘Top of the Pops’, which shaped the adolescent pop culture. The stars appeared on a Thursday night and lip-synched to their hits. Then one night (1972) a band called ‘Roxy Music’ appeared and turned the whole thing on its head. I can still see the performance in my mind’s eye. I had suddenly been exposed to ‘Art School Rock’. They were remarkably radical, different musically and visually.
Around the same time (1973) an album was released on ‘Virgin Records’ called ‘The Faust Tapes’. This was a marketing experiment which had a retail price of 49 pence (UK) – so lots of people bought it and a lot of people threw it into the trash. The German band Faust were without a record deal and their producer Uwe Nettlebeck gave these tapes to Virgin for free. These apparently thrown together bits of tape noises, sounds, songs etc. were all mangled together – well, that is what most people thought. In reality it was an exceptionally well crafted piece of work and was the inspiration for my EEtapes release ‘Extraction’ in 1989.

These two things combined with going to Art School eventually got me involved in experimenting with recorded sound. The first machines I used were a Phillips reel to reel and a budget priced cassette recorder.

My heroes have grown old with me or they have died - maybe their death has been a way to freeze time, stop the aging process - not only for them but for me also?

'Peter's exhibition was inspired by iconic images he used when he was at art school in the 70s on the theme of Beauty and the Beast - inc Sid and Nancy and Guy the Gorilla! - and I think the results are really bold and impactful.'

The term mixed media has always made me want to reach for the puke bucket – I prefer the expression ‘Combine Painting’ or in this case ‘Combine Drawing’.I have always been a hoarder, newspaper clippings, postcards etc. It is only now that I have decided to recycle them.Juxtaposing images, either as a collage or printing is not simply a decorative process it is a complicated exercise. The mind always tries to create a narrative between images. The juxtaposition of arbitrary marks, color, photographs etc. will always tease and trick the mind into rationalizing what it is trying to process and attempt to make physical world references – in other words make sense of what it is trying to analyze.

As an 11 year old I watched the first moon landing in 1969. I was mad about everything to do with space travel, I would read anything that was about rockets, cosmonauts and astronauts. Later in my life I shook the hand of a man who shook the hand of my all time hero Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin, that was for me like touching history, if only secondhand (excuse the pun).

I was rummaging through old boxes of stuff and found the newspaper cutting of an astronaut on the moon – yellowed and faded – it still makes my heart flutter. I wish I’d been to the moon.

TEXT BELOW FROM SITE

Sam Bright, was what you would call a real character. He couldn’t wait for the moment to tell a story or crack a joke. A soldier, a coalminer, a chef at Blackpool Casino, a fish and chip shop owner, a shopkeeper, a pallbearer, these were a few of his careers.

During the First World War he found himself as a cook, responsible for the well being of his comrades. The meagre rations that the army supplied needed supplementing by scavenging. Often he went on ‘raiding parties’, sneaking into French farms, pilfering this and that. He once found himself in a Frenchman’s dovecote. This was nearly his final mission. The farmer gave chase and then levelled his loaded rifle at him. He wasn’t really proud of his thieving but as he explained, it was war and his mates were hungry. One of his most poignant tales was about a march to the ‘front’. In the hedgerow Sam spotted a ham bone which had a bit of meat left on it. They got to the frontline and as the history books tell us conditions were appalling and the rations were low. Sam remembered the ham bone, and on the march back retrieved it from the hedge to use in the next stew.

Trench warfare lost him many friends and the sight of an eye. He spotted a German sniper who unfortunately spotted him. He was wounded and his commanding officer suggested that he remained at his post to give his comrades a better chance to fallback, promising his family a medal for his sacrifice. I’m not sure what he said but he was invalided out of service and was treated at Guys Hospital in London, where they patched him up and cosmetically made a fine job. Apparently this damaged eye was assisted by a rabbit’s nerve.(?)

When Mary was in her teens she was aprenticed to a chemist in Sheffield, travelling by train every day from her home.

She was the woman behind the scenes in their grocer’s shop, where they were famous for their home made ‘ice lollies‘. People still remember them for their delicious treats, which they made from ‘Tizer‘ and other bottles of ‘pop’.

She was a ‘Spiritulist’ by conviction, with local business men and tradesmen alike knocking on her door for advice and guidance, and her ‘messages’ influenced deals and life changes all around her. The respect she had was far larger than her diminutive size.

You missed my exhibition - it was today!

I decided to have an impromptu exhibition - it is so impromptu the people who are coming to visit don't even know it is an exhibition.

As an artist (well sort of) it is easier to encourage people to look, touch even buy your works of art in a gallery. High Street shopping and gallery purchases are a sensual experience, so how does this work on the Internet?

We are all constantly searching for the next must have object - we read reviews, visit galleries, go shopping and are sometimes captured by cynical marketing. When friends, neighbors and family show off their latest lifestyle purchase, frantic impulse buying (online) begins - we want the lifestyle but we want it cheaper.

WordPress for the iPhone

Well here we are and there is a great spread out in front of us - there is: roast chicken (my favorite) two iPhones, carrots and peas, a Samsung Galaxy, potatoes, gravy and an iPod Touch (not forgetting a bowl of salad). I have been looking forward to this all day. I only managed to grab a small sandwich for lunch while I slaving over my iMac.

The best thing about my iPhone is my WordPress app. The WordPress app allows you to update several blogs from one device, moderate comments, create or edit posts and pages and add images or videos more easily. The best feature is the ability to add a photo quickly to your posts. This was more difficult to do with the earlier versions of the app.

Fingerprints on white borders – nightmare on a short print run. A fingerprint is an impression left by the friction ridges of a human finger = fingerprints are the traces of an impression from the friction ridges of any part of a human hand. Impressions of fingerprints may be left behind on a surface by the natural secretions of sweat from the eccrine glands that are present in friction ridge skin, or they may be made by ink or other substances transferred from the peaks of friction ridges on the skin to a relatively smooth surface such as a fingerprint card. Fingerprints records normally contain impressions from the pad on the last joint of fingers and thumbs, although fingerprint cards also typically record portions of lower joint areas of the fingers.

Rediscovering the printing process after nearly 40 years has been an interesting process – disappointingly modern inks are not as rich in colour (earthy colours are very plastic like) and modern waterbased inks don’t become part of the surface, they sit on it, which is incredibly frustrating – the reason I took up printing in the first place was because of the absorbed flatness of the pigments.

This constant bombardment of self promotion from twitter, facebook etc. is driving me nuts. The Internet is a more sophisticated tool than this. It is a travesty to allow it to become a vehicle for pure unadulterated, egotistical spam.

"Come and see my new products on my new website! ;)" You know as soon as that pops up in front of you on your screen the prospect of having a tooth removed without pain relief is more tempting. This constant relentless blitzkrieg of drivel makes me want to surrender. Quite frankly if your modus operandi is purely to get noticed, because you think you are interesting, you need to get a life! Put some of your energy into saving the planet (or a Panda) and not just your ego. Better still get out there and make real friends and become interesting.

Owning a small business requires a lot of faith and belief, you need to believe in your product (after all it is your baby). To simply survive you require enthusiasm, conviction and self belief. I have all this and much, much more...but it is so tiring!

I've had enough! I want a job (maybe not a career) that provides a monthly salary, one that gives me a specific amount of cash flowing into my bank account every month. Cassette Culture was an offshoot of the mail art movement of the 1970s and 1980s, it emerged from the DIY ethic of punk. In the UK cassette culture was born during the post-punk period, 1978–1984, extending through the late '80s and into the '90s. It was a postal-based network identical to the mail art scene.

The packaging and designing of the insert sleeve of cassette releases was an important part of the movement, a high degree of creativity and originality was visable in the execution of the overall appearence of the prioduct. Most of the packaging relied on traditional plastic shells with a photocopied "J-card" insert but some artists broke away from the restrictive dimensions of the audio cassette format, either in a slick graphic way or by taking an anti-art stand point - using a conceptual, DADA methodology.

BWCD released a cassette by Japanese noise artist Aube that came tied to a blue plastic ashtray shaped like a fish. EEtapes of Belgium release of This Window "Extraction 2" was packaged with an X-ray of a broken limb in 1995. The Barry Douglas Lamb album "Ludi Funebres" had the cassette box buried in some earth contained in a larger outer tin and covered in leaves.

The European scene was very active during this period with exceptional 'labels' appearing in Germany and Belgium.

IRRE Tapes (Germany) run by Matthias Lang evolved out of the IRRE Fanzine which he published regularly during the early 1980's covering New Wave, Post Punk and the German Underground. This European cassette label helped to spread the word around the world, supporting the independent, self financed artist, releasing material by the likes of Brume, Maeror Tri, City Of Worms and This Window. His eclectic taste covered the whole range of the DIY, Independent Underground music scene from Experimental Electronica to Guitar Pop.

How did you spread the word of the tape label? Magazines, other labels, radio?

Tja ob IRRE Tapes je bekannt war? Wenn dann eher durch das unabhängige Netzwerk in der ganzen Welt, damals konnte man auch noch kostengünstig Tapes in andere Länder schicken... die Mehrzahl der Tapes wurde mit Gleichgesinnten in der ganzen Welt getauscht, so richtig kommerziell verkauft wurden die wenigsten - dafür hab ich heute aber auch noch unzählige Kisten alter Tapes die ich im Tausch damals bekommen hatte. Es gab zwar auch kommerziellere Vertriebe, die aber nie wirklich lange z.B. der tolle 235 Laden ich glaube in Bad Honnef. Die hatten auch mit tolle Mailorder-Kataloge, geniale Ideen z.B. gab es da das Tape des Monats das man per Dauerauftrag bekommen konnte......

Well, if IRRE-tapes were really that popular? If so, the independent network all around the world helped to make the label popular...at that time postage for tapes to be sent to other countries was quite cheap...the majority of tapes was swapped with artists all around the world and only a very few were really commercially sold. I still have many boxes full of old tapes that I received by trade. There were also more commercial distributors that never existed so long, like the 235-shop in Bad Honnef. They had great mailorder-catalogues and it was even possible to get there the „tape of the month“ by periodical payment order.

I was selected for "Softcopy" exhibition at the Kimura Gallery, University of Alaska, April 3-17, 2006. I have always been fascinated by time and this exhibition was an ideal opportunity to document a period in my life when I was obsessed with genetics and had embarked on breeding a champion mouse to gain a National Mouse Club best in breed trophy. Our vast knowledge on the way living thing are made, enable us to create larger or smaller domesticated animals or other living organisms for food and pleasure.

The piece exhibited in the 'Softcopy' exhibition was called 'Site Under Construction' this was an ongoing project I started in 1999, which explored the complex idea of identity and truth. Documenting how to breed a 'difficult colour' - difficult colours are the colours painters love to use. I was painting with living things.

Through out the web there are thousands of extremist viewpoints all ejaculating vicious and malicious bile. By assuming an extreme identity you can adapt innocent information and create a political or moral hard-line manifesto and engage in extreme ideologies and propagate propaganda. Extremes like fascism can be alluring in times of National crisis and could be considered as a remedy for terrorism and economic crisis. (I naturally don't agree with this but...)

Selective breeding to create the perfect, idealized form and color within living organisms (if taken to the extreme) have similar philosophies and methodologies to those employed in ethnic cleansing. The weak and imperfect are destroyed and non-conforming breeding stock culled; the aim is to create an elite super species. Read more...

The Hare With Amber Eyes: A Hidden Inheritance, is a book about 'the history of objects' or in this case a collection of objects, an inherited collection of Japanese netsuke.

Objects take on a life of their own when they leave the creators hands. They are no longer the responsibility of the artist (craftsman) - they move through history, out-living their custodians, moving on through history and catastrophe. They are survivors.

Tiny and tactile the netsuke are "small, tough explosions of exactitude." Their story spans cultures and continents. They were originally the possessions (the collection) of the Ephrussis, wealthy Jewish grain traders who spread from Russia to the important, wealthy capitals of Europe - their empire finally being destroyed by the Nazis.

These objects tell a fascinating story about the way the world has been molded by the need for commodities and trade, greed, war and jealousy.

Art is a commodity, a product of capitalism.

My heroes have grown old with me or they have died – maybe their death has been a way to freeze time, stop the aging process – not only for them but for me also?.

‘Peter’s exhibition was inspired by iconic images he used when he was at art school in the 70s on the theme of Beauty and the Beast – inc Sid and Nancy and Guy the Gorilla! – and I think the results are really bold and impactful.’

I have always been a hoarder, newspaper clippings, postcards etc. It is only now that I have decided to recycle them.

Guy the Gorilla (May 30, 1946 – 1978) was a Western Lowland Gorilla (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) which was London Zoo‘s famous resident, something of a celebrity in the 1960s–70s and was often profiled on kids TV shows and natural history productions. Guy the Gorilla was one of London Zoo’s best-loved animals.He arrived at the zoo on 5 November 1947, Guy Fawkes Night, hence his name. …the experience of the landscape viewed in shorthand, the trick is to imply with the minimum of effort…

Unfortunately the majority of landscape art fails miserably. However, ‘Lake Lucerne: the Bay of Uri from above Brunnen‘ circa 1844 (by Turner) is the ultimate painting of landscape and nature – it tells a massive story with very little content. This has been an important painting for me since the early 1970’s. I have always admired the New York Abstract Expressionists of the mid 20th century but when I first saw this painting by Turner…… my sock were blown off. It is without doubt a clever (maybe unfinished) conceptual landscape painting.

Landscapes that are seen at speed, blurred, undefined, with a static, pinpoint horizon are better than watching TV. In many respects transferring theses visual clues into (in my case) paint gives a prompt, a reminder of the general feel of the landscape… an estimate, a representation/illusion takes on more realness than the actual physical object, the object then becomes a metaphor for the created illusion. This in turn creates an additional reference for the object, an extra visual adjective eg. ‘The sky was very Turneresque.’ Turner’s illusion becomes a metaphor for the real thing, which vividly describes [in words] the actual sky. The concrete object cannot say everything about itself – it has a limited vocabulary and is unable to say what is required of it. It is on many levels mute.

There are some reference books that follow you and stay with you through out your life. 'Art Since Pop' is such a book, published in 1975 (by Dolphin). This book simply sets out to do what it says in the title, explaining art movements such as Process Art, Land Art, Conceptual Art and Body Art, in a brief but concise way. None of the movements of fine art covered in this pocket sized book are dealt with in great depth but it provides an informed introduction to these different concepts and methodologies, reassessing its effectiveness and ability to move on and change. The beauty of this book is the fact that it was written closer to 'as it was happening' and gives an optimistic appraisal of art movements that have since been sidelined or dismissed as mere Cul-de-sacs.

John A. Walker (b. 1938) is a British art critic and historian who has written over 15 books on modern and contemporary art with an emphasis on mass media. He has also written on design history methodology. Walker's books include Art since Pop (1975), Design history and the history of design with Judy Attfield (1990), John Latham: The Incidental Person - His Art and Ideas (1994), Cultural Offensive: America's Impact on British Art since 1945 (1998),[4] Art & Outrage (1999), Supercollector: A Critique of Charles Saatchi with Rita Hatton (2000),Left Shift: Radical Art in 1970s Britain (2001), Art in the Age of Mass Media (3rd ed.: 2001), Art and Celebrity (2003) and Firefighters in Art and Media: A Pictorial History (2009).

Walker was a Reader in Art and Design History at Middlesex University near London until retiring in 1999. He was trained as a painter at Newcastle upon Tyne.

I wish I’d painted this (maybe?)

Manet’s Olympia (which is in the Musée d’Orsay) is probably one of my favourite paintings. In 1974 at Stourbridge College of Art I did a series of paintings based on ‘Page 3 models’ and I was intrigued how Manet’s Olympia had the same soft porn feel to it – inviting but not hardcore. I went to Paris in 1978 and took this photo which I’ve just rediscovered. I’ve no idea who the bloke is – he could be her pimp or maybe he was first in the queue.

What shocked contemporary French audiences of the late 19th century was not Olympia’s nudity, nor even the presence of her black maid (the black female was regarded by 19th century Europeans as a savage, a nymphomaniac – to have a white woman naked with her maid clothed was a provocative statement). Olympia’s confrontational, erotic gaze and the symbolic references to her as a courtesan (demi-mondaine): the orchid in her hair, her bracelet, pearl earrings and the oriental shawl on which she lies, which are symbols of wealth and sensuality. The black ribbon around her neck, and her single cast-off slipper mark her as a temptress.

The painting was inspired by Titian’s Venus of Urbino, which in turn refers to Giorgione’s Sleeping Venus. Olympia’s authoritative hand (the model was Victorine Meurent) covers her nudity (same as a Page 3 girl) as if to emphasize her independence, sexual dominance and her status as an object of desire. Manet replaced the little dog (symbol of fidelity) in Titian’s painting with a black cat, which symbolized prostitution. People have suggested that she is looking in the direction of a door, as a client barges in unannounced, I would prefer to think she is waiting for me.

Rejoice people, rejoice! ‘Trapped In The Hometown’ has a gauzy tangle of music behind slowly drawn vocals with its memorable guitar rising alongside and revealing a weighty variety of musical avenues to pull you down; the mood empty, or brightly in your face, a thoroughly diverting, divine encounter. ‘Playing At Life’ is even better with a mean throb, and more of his sublimely catchy, nagging guitar with Nicola’s unusually piercing vocals and a weirdly spooky synth. ‘Solace’ is more relaxed, actually far more towards the This Window style, being like ambient bellows, billowing...........and there’s an intriguing little slice called ‘Ripples In The Water’ at the end too.

Guy was the replacement for the zoo’s previous gorilla, Meng, who died in 1941. Guy was captured in the French Cameroons on behalf of Paris Zoo and was traded for a tiger from Calcutta Zoo. It was organized that London Zoo would have Guy. The Paris Zoo Director sent instructions to their game department in West Africa to find a suitable female to mate with him.London sent a request to a variety of animal dealers and zoos worldwide to find a mate, and in 1969 the zoo was offered Lomie, a five year old female who had been living in nearby Chessington Zoo. She lived in the old Monkey House in London Zoo for a year before being introduced to Guy.

1978: I once had a girlfriend called Anne who wore ‘Charlie’ perfume. Every time we came close I sneezed. This was not conducive to a passionate affair. Guy the Gorilla (May 30, 1946 – 1978) was a Western Lowland Gorilla (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) which was London Zoo‘s famous resident, something of a celebrity in the 1960s–70s and was often profiled on kids TV shows and natural history productions. Guy the Gorilla was one of London Zoo’s best-loved animals.

He arrived at the zoo on 5 November 1947, Guy Fawkes Night, hence his name. He was a tiny baby, weighing just 23 lb (10 kg) and holding a small tin hot-water bottle. Guy was the replacement for the zoo’s previous gorilla, Meng, who died in 1941. Guy was captured in the French Cameroons on behalf of Paris Zoo and was traded for a tiger from Calcutta Zoo. It was organized that London Zoo would have Guy. The Paris Zoo Director sent instructions to their game department in West Africa to find a suitable female to mate with him.

London sent a request to a variety of animal dealers and zoos worldwide to find a mate, and in 1969 the zoo was offered Lomie, a five year old female who had been living in nearby Chessington Zoo. She lived in the old Monkey House in London Zoo for a year before being introduced to Guy. When the new Ape and Monkey House, the Michael Sobell Pavilion, was opened in 1971, Guy and Lomie were finally introduced. However, after 25 years of isolation, it was too late; they never produced any offspring.

Lowland gorillas are the world’s largest primates. Males can weigh between 140 and 275 kg. His dimensions as silverback were measured in 1966 and 1971: he weighed 520 lb (240 kg), was 5 ft 4 in (1.63 m) tall, and had an arm span of 9 ft (2.7 m). His upper arm had a circumference of 23.5 in (58 cm), his thighs 28 in (70 cm), and his neck 36 in (90 cm).

His appearance was fearsome, yet his nature was very gentle; when small birds flew into his cage, he reportedly lifted them up on his hands and examined them softly. This gentleness is said to have been a major part of his great popularity.

Guy died aged over 30 years, in 1978 of a heart attack during an operation on his infected teeth. By this time he had become an icon. Public awareness of animal behavior had been growing, thanks to the ever-improving natural history programmes on television, while studies of wild apes by scientists like Jane Goodall, Biruté Galdikas and Diane Fossey were changing the public’s attitude towards primates.
The Natural History Museum head taxidermist at the time, Arthur Hayward, was given the task of modelling and mounting Guy’s skin. After nearly nine months of work, the magnificent re-creation of Guy was put on display at the Natural History Museum in November 1982. Years later Guy was taken out of public display and moved into the scientific study collections. As of October 2006, Guy is on display in the ‘Weird and Wonderful section’ of the redeveloped Weston Park Museum, Sheffield.
In 1982 he was commemorated by a bronze statue by William Timym, located near the main entrance by the Michael Sobell Pavilion for Monkeys and Apes, where Guy spent his final years.

The objectives of the West Buckland Festival are to:

Provide music, art and entertainment for the purpose of enriching the lives of people in North Devon and raise monies for the upkeep of St Peter's Church, West Buckland and to provide additional funding for another Charity or Charities chosen by the Festival Committee each year.

In 2011, the Festival Committee will make an allocation of surplus funds to the North Devon District Hospital Chemotherapy Unit Appeal, to the PCC of St Peter's Church and to East Buckland and West Buckland Village Hall.

Some 5,000 cancer patients attend North Devon District Hospital each year for chemotherapy. The care and attention are good, but the surroundings aren't. This vital Appeal is to raise £2m+ to create a purpose designed Unit that is comfortable and welcoming. We hope that you will give as generously as possible and support the Festival so that we can give as much as possible to this Appeal.

Yes, the only thing that did get released was when Finish The Story was as good as finished – I’d walked off stage in the middle of a gig at the ‘AdLib’ and decided to call it a day (or was I sacked?). It had all got too much for me, all I could here was that fucking violin and I thought I’m playing bollocks? I can’t hear Garry, has Nicola done that bit yet? This sounds shit and I am disappointed. It was the last straw that broke…….besides. I was trying to hold down a job and I was in love. I’d reached breaking point. Nicola and I eventually put this behind us and we had a go at writing songs together. Zig Zag (magazine) offered Nicola a track on an album they were releasing in conjunction with Situation Two (Beggars Banquet) - we recorded a version of ‘Like A Sickle Runs Through Corn’ on the old Tascam 144 which I mixed onto a Revox PR9910 - that was released on ‘Gunfire and Pianos’ (like ‘Doorways’ a track recorded in a bedroom in Bromsgrove). There are 6 impressive ‘money-can’t buy’ Lots. Each Lot has an estimated worth of £200+. No bid can be accepted for less than £180 and in the case of some Lots the minimum required bid is higher. Just a reminder if you live in the Barnstaple area of Devon and you are aged between eight and fourteen or have children within that age group, West Buckland School Art Department are running a comprehensive series of holiday art activities. This offer is open to the general public and not just specifically for the pupils of the school.

If so, come and spend some time with us at West Buckland School Art Department, where we will be teaching you how to make clay sculptures, masks, flags, screen printed t-shirts and much more!

We are open on weekdays from 1st to 10th August from 8.30am until 5.30pm (£25) or half day sessions are available from 8.30am to 12.45pm and 12.45pm to 5.30pm (£14). Places are limited to twenty six per day, so please book in advance.

'The Gallery' 2011

I am slowly getting the list together of artist who will be invited to exhibit at the West Buckland Festival in September 2011. Being the 'Festival Director of Art' means that ultimately I will offend someone when I don't select them - who needs to be popular?

The aim of the The Gallery exhibition, which runs during the West Buckland Festival, is promote selected, amateur and professional artist living within the dispersed communities of North Devon and beyond. Past exhibitions have received critical acclaim and have been remarkably successful for artists and visitors. Diversity has been the success of these exhibitions, with entries ranging from textiles, painting, carving, printmaking and ceramics etc.

Exhibitors are all artists and crafts people from North Devon. Artists are invited to enter Works of Art that are new or that have not been exhibited before. We expect that there will be up to 100 Works of Art to view and enjoy. Many Works will be on sale and can be acquired during the Preview and throughout the Festival weekend.

West Buckland Festival cannot be held liable for any damage or loss, so those exhibiting are exhibiting at their own risk.

West Buckland Festival reserves the right to hang the exhibition as they think appropriate and to refuse to exhibit a work if it is regarded as being unsuitable.

West Buckland Festival have prioritized original work over prints.

Work is offered for sale but a commission of 20% will be charged (deducted form sale price). The total cost of work must be paid to the festival who will issue artists with the balance less commission.

Editing images for exhibition?

I have begun to collate the prints and paintings ready to be hung in the gallery at West Buckland School. I have now begun a massive editing process in my head - I have over 30 images to choose from (all framed and shiny) ranging from 18' to 5 feet in height (90% have been produced in 60 days). I need to extract about 20 images.

The only way I am going to to this is by looking back over my notes (below) and work out what exactly I want to achieve.

Printmaking has always been the poor relation of the art world. The print is something we traditionally buy as a reproduction of a serious piece of work (painting). The tradition of printing has evolved and the print maker maybe an artist?

'Peter's exhibition was inspired by iconic images he used when he was at art school in the 70's on the theme of Beauty and the Beast - inc Sid and Nancy and Guy the Gorilla! - and I think the results are really bold and impactful.'

Rediscovering the printing process after nearly 40 years has been an interesting process - disappointingly modern inks are not as rich in colour (earthy colours are very plastic like) and modern waterbased inks don't become part of the surface, they sit on it, which is incredibly frustrating - the reason I took up printing in the first place was because of the absorbed flatness of the pigments.

Beauty and the Beast - painting 2011

What is the relationship between the woman and the ape? Who is the beast? This is another painting earmarked for my next exhibition. It is paint and print on canvas (size: 16" x 16").

Juxtaposing images, either as a collage or printing is not simply a decorative process it is a complicated exercise. The mind always tries to create a narrative between images. The juxtaposition of arbitrary marks, color, photographs etc. will always tease and trick the mind into rationalizing what it is trying to process and attempt to make physical world references - in other words make sense of what it is trying to analyze. The definition of what is art and what isn't has become wooly. Painting is often defined as the application of a medium applied to a surface with a brush but in reality painting can involve other practices like printing. There are generally unspoken guidelines for what makes a good painting. These intuitive components determine the painting's aesthetic value. These values and sensibilities constantly go through a shift, depending on cultural, political and social tolerances. There is no longer one definition for what makes a successful painting.

As an 11 year old I watched the first moon landing in 1969. I was mad about everything to do with space travel, I would read anything that was about rockets, cosmonauts and astronauts. Later in my life I shook the hand of a man who shook the hand of my all time hero Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin, that was for me like touching history, if only secondhand (excuse the pun).

I have just been rummaging through old boxes of stuff and found the picture above – yellowed and faded – it still makes my heart flutter. I wish I’d been to the moon.

Woodcuts

The most inspirational woodcuts (for me) are by Émile Bernard. Émile Henri Bernard (April 28, 1868 – April 16, 1941) is known as a Post-Impressionist painter who had artistic friendships with Van Gogh, Gauguin, Eugene Boch and Cézanne. Most of his notable work was accomplished at a young age, in the years 1886 through 1897. He is also associated with Cloisonnism and Synthetism, two late 19th century art movements. Less known is Bernard’s literary work, comprising plays, poetry, and art criticism as well as art historical statements that contain first hand information on the crucial period of modern art to which Bernard had contributed. Bernard was in many ways, the young, educated and intellectual mentor, who was crucial in intellectualising and inspiring Paul Gauguin during the Pont Aven period of his career. Read more…

‘Bernard’s ideas fired Gauguin’s enthusiasm, and Bernard’s important painting Breton Women in the Meadow (1888; France, priv. col.), a starkly drawn and crudely painted composition depicting a Breton Pardon, enabled Gauguin to go on to produce his own revolutionary painting Vision after the Sermon: Jacob Wrestling with the Angel (1888; Edinburgh, N.G.) in a similar style and composition. Bernard exhibited Cloisonnist paintings and prints of Breton inspiration alongside Gauguin and other artists at the Exposition Universelle of 1889, at the Café Volpini. This exhibition acted as a catalyst on the Nabi group and drew a number of new adherents to the Pont-Aven school.’

They just keep happening. In reality these have taken me weeks to produce but at least the walls of the gallery will be covered! Maybe?

I have begun a series of paintings (screenprints) ready for my exhibition in the ‘Long Gallery’ (West Buckland School, Barnstaple, North Devon). The loose idea for these images is based around the title ‘Beauty and the Beast’ – the ‘beauty‘ will be a large ape. This will coincide with a workshop I am giving on how to create woodcuts.

If you could turn back time would you? Would painting make more sense?

The definition of what is art and what isn't has become wooly. Painting is often defined as the application of a medium applied to a surface with a brush but in reality painting can involve other practices like printing. There are generally unspoken guidelines for what makes a good painting. These intuitive components determine the painting's aesthetic value. These values and sensibilities constantly go through a shift, depending on cultural, political and social tolerances. There is no longer one definition for what makes a successful painting.

I have always been a hoarder, newspaper clippings, postcards etc. It is only now that I have decided to recycle them.

As an 11 year old I watched the first moon landing in 1969. I was mad about everything to do with space travel, I would read anything that was about rockets, cosmonauts and astronauts. Later in my life I shook the hand of a man who shook the hand of my all time hero Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin, that was for me like touching history, if only secondhand (excuse the pun).

I have just been rummaging through old boxes of stuff and found the picture above – yellowed and faded – it still makes my heart flutter. I wish I’d been to the moon.

Where are the references for my next exhibition?

Action Painting – Pollock. Print dribbled paint.
Soft pink landscapes (1980) Richard Hamilton A landscape of soft focus and toilet paper - a turgid landscape. Collotype and Screenprint - text and image. A remembered exhibition.
Rediscovering the printing process after nearly 40 years has been an interesting process – disappointingly modern inks are not as rich in colour (earthy colours are very plastic like) and modern waterbased inks don’t become part of the surface, they sit on it, which is incredibly frustrating – the reason I took up printing in the first place was because of the absorbed flatness of the pigments.
I have also had the urge to do a series of paintings based around the title ‘In God We Trust’ but that will have to wait.

The best-known written version was an abridgement of her work published in 1756 by Jeanne-Marie Le Prince de Beaumont, in Magasin des enfants, ou dialogues entre une sage gouvernante et plusieurs de ses élèves; an English translation appeared in 1757. The tale has perhaps been made most recently famous by the retelling in the 1991 Disney film.

Old images and ideas revisited and recycled – re-executed in print and paint. A body of work based around “Beauty and the Beast” a classic tale of love, rejection and prejudice, where the beauty is the beast and the beast is the beauty. An allegory, a symbolic representation or a metaphor for my feelings towards ART.

Beauty and the Beast (French: La Belle et la Bête) is a traditional fairy tale. Variants of the tale are known across Europe. In France, for example, Zémire et Azor is an operatic version of the story of Beauty and the Beast written by Marmontel and composed by Grétry in 1771. It had enormous success well into the 19th century. It is based on the second version of the tale. The tale has perhaps been made most recently famous by the retelling in the 1991 Disney film.

The term mixed media has always made me want to reach for the puke bucket - I prefer the expression 'Combine Painting'.

I have always been a hoarder, newspaper clippings, postcards etc. It is only now that I have decided to recycle them.

Juxtaposing images, either as a collage or printing is not simply a decorative process it is a complicated exercise. The mind always tries to create a narrative between images. The juxtaposition of arbitrary marks, color, photographs etc. will always tease and trick the mind into rationalizing what it is trying to process and attempt to make physical world references - in other words make sense of what it is trying to analyze. What happend to the space age? - Painting

After finding a yellowing newspaper cutting I had saved in 1969 I have decided to do a painting about it. I will publish results here.

I was really please to see that an article(?) about the next exhibition and printmaking workshop was featured on to the website artsandentertainment.org.uk. This webzine is a great source of information for the arts in North Devon. There is a diary section that lists everything that is going on in the area: Art Courses, Theatre, Music, Gigs, Arts Festivals etc. There are also several great articles.

Time for 'Bed"

Juxtaposing images, either as a collage or printing is not simply a decorative process it is a complicated exercise. The mind always tries to create a narrative between images. The juxtaposition of arbitrary marks, color, photographs etc. will always tease and trick the mind into rationalizing what it is trying to process and attempt to make physical world references - in other words make sense of what it is trying to analyze.

The surreal aspect of abstract art has been (in many cases) ignored. Artists like Rauschenberg and Richard Hamilton have exploited the absurdities of Marcel Duchamp and created something new - a combination of artistic and painterly ideas that has a foot in every camp.

Capitalizing on the visual freedom of expression that the Abstract Expressionists gave artists, Rauschenberg incorporated their processes of mark making into his vision of (Pop) Art. The meshing together of gestural marks and the printed image or 'objets trouvé' further complicated the visual dialogue - by laying over a print or combining an object somehow makes the process of untangling the visual image simpler.

'Bed' is executed in a technique he called 'combine painting'.

Robert Rauschenberg was a massive influence on my painting, printing and music. Images (and sounds) that are arbitrarily spliced together in an apparent random manner will, when juxtaposed against each other, create a narrative. This meshing together of unrelated imagery may appear to be arbitrary but the intellectual decision making that goes with the process is absolutely phenomenal. It is therefore unrealistic to expect the uneducated masses to view these images as ‘real art’. The birth of Photoshop has enabled everybody to create ‘non-intellectual’ versions of Rauchenberg (and Warhol).
